Investment Philosophy

01 A Principled Approach

Embracing the tenets of 'First principles thinking,' we dissect complex problems into their fundamental elements, adopting a bottom-up approach to construct innovative solutions. This method underpins our commitment to addressing recurrent situations, recognizing the cyclical nature of history. Our investment strategies are informed by rigorous study and analysis, integrating historical insights into our decision-making processes.

02 An Owner's Perspective

Echoing the ethos of Warren Buffett, we adopt an owner's mindset in our investments. This perspective involves not only holding equity in businesses but also actively supporting the founders and management teams. Our aim is to contribute positively to both shareholder value and broader stakeholder interests.

03 A Relentless Quest for Excellence

Our philosophy is defined by an unyielding commitment to excellence. This pursuit extends beyond mere satisfaction, focusing on the refinement of ideas and their execution. Our investment scope encompasses publicly traded companies, private equity, and venture capital, with a steadfast ambition to harness our resources for the greater good of humanity.

04 A Strategic and Practical Framework

In the dynamic realm of investing, we appreciate the need for a dual focus: strategic foresight coupled with practical realism. This approach ensures that our portfolio companies are both visionary and grounded, enabling them to navigate the future while staying rooted in practical realities.

05 A Founder's Mentality

Building a successful and resilient business with a sustainable "moat" is a formidable challenge. In our investment process, maintaining a founder's mentality, coupled with an emphasis on creating and nurturing a competitive moat, is crucial. This approach allows us to deeply appreciate and actively contribute to each step of the journey, from strategizing for enduring competitive advantages to learning from both successes and setbacks.

Leadership

AP Fund was founded by Andy Pan in December 2016 with the premise of delivering outsized returns to its shareholders and limited partners. This success enables the Fund to allocate more resources towards making the world a better place. Andy embarked on his investment and entrepreneurial endeavors at a young age in China. Growing up, he was actively engaged in a variety of intellectual pursuits. At age 8, he began building reusable mini rockets from recycled soda bottles, incorporating Parachute Recovery Systems and GPS tracking to ensure their safe retrieval. This early endeavor showcased his burgeoning engineering skills. He also excelled in chess, winning regional championships within the highly competitive environment of Shanghai, a city with a population of about 26 million. His aptitude for strategy, innovation, and technology led him to be one of the youngest finalists in the Olympia robotics contest in Shanghai. As a teenager, he ventured into the equity market, where his initial investment in the newspaper sector yielded a 150% return.

Andy's academic endeavors brought him to the United States, where he pursued a Master of Science in Instructional Systems. His career trajectory then led him to strategic and operational roles at globally recognized companies like Disney, LVMH/Sephora, and Amazon. There, he focused on crafting global strategies, overseeing their effective implementation, and spearheading digitization initiatives, showcasing his wide-ranging expertise in these critical business domains. A notable milestone in his career was his key role in the strategic design and development of the over $5.5 billion Shanghai Disneyland expansion project, working alongside talented Disney Imagineers and cast members. This collaborative endeavor not only honed his expertise in strategic planning, global operations, and long-term thinking and vision setting but also laid the groundwork for emerging thought leadership. This blend of success at Disney and his formative investment and entrepreneurial experiences adeptly positioned Andy to engage in larger-scale investment opportunities.

Under Andy's leadership, AP Fund has consistently achieved strong and stable above average returns year-over-year since its inception. In recent years, AP Fund has diversified its portfolio by investing in prominent private pre-IPO companies such as SpaceX, initially valued at $100 billion and now exceeding $175 billion, and Plaid, valued at $21 billion. These investments are aimed at enhancing humanity's potential through support of multiplanetary and sustainable initiatives. Additionally, the Fund actively contributes to educational philanthropy.

Besides managing AP Fund and advising startup founders, Andy devotes his time to synthesizing massive amounts of information, similar to Warren Buffett's routine of reading over 600 pages daily. A pivotal moment in his educational journey was attending the Advanced Topics in Private Equity (FNCE 8010) class taught by the esteemed Wharton professor and Senior Fellow Dan Zilberman, who also serves as the Managing Director, Partner, Global Head of Capital Solutions, and Global Co-Head of Financial Services at Warburg Pincus. Much like Buffett's acknowledgment of Ben Graham's influence, Andy credits Professor Zilberman's deep expertise and engaging teaching style for profoundly shaping his approach to investments, emphasizing fiduciary responsibility, meticulous analysis, and a thoughtful and strategic perspective for achieving long-term, outsized returns. Additionally, he is pursuing his second master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Educational Big Data Mining.
